You will now need to go through an application process; this can vary from company to company and below is a suggested example of the various stages of the process to help you prepare.
We hope the above has been useful however, please do remember this application process is a guideline and there may be slight changes to the stages depending on which pub company you find your pub with.
Varying from company to company, all will provide on-going support to realise your dream of running your own successful pub business. The support you receive can be split into different categories and each one will demonstrate the value to your business. A selection of services for example could include:-
A licensee whose first pub with ei publican partnerships won its National Community Hero Award has taken on a second pub with the company. Adrian Emmett took over The Lion in Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley four years ago.
Such has been the success of his partnership with the pubco that he was keen to work with them on his second venture – Porters in Blackwood, 20 miles down the road. He explains: “Through working with ei publican partnerships and seeing that they’re a great company to work with and provide a good support network, I decided to take on Porters with them.
“They do what they say – when we agree on something, they carry it through. There have been a few incidents in the past where they could have said no, but they haven’t. It’s a good working partnership.”
Adrian attributes his success to both the community and the pub company. The pub has events and activities throughout the year for its customers, including two pool and darts teams and a football team.
“I’m just the guy with the keys,” he says. “We’re a close-knit community pub, and the more we do, the more our customers spend with us, and it just grows from there. We have an annual Winter Wonderland at Christmas and in the summer we do a music festival that attracts up to 2,000 people.
“The benefits of working on a tenancy basis with ei publican partnerships is that the investment isn’t as high, so there’s a lot more opportunity. There are benefits to having a free house, but it’s a large financial commitment.”
The Lion is one of ei publican partnerships Beacon pubs. “It’s an agreement where they invest into the premises, they set prices and have a good support package for the licensees, to help with marketing and the fixed costs,” Adrian explains.
One of the major benefits for him is the constant new offers and the willingness from ei publican partnerships to invest into pubs. He explains: “It benefits both ei publican partnerships and me” Adrian also gets support from his business development manager. “He’s here as often or as little as I want – he’s a good support network.”
Matt Ralphs, Recruitment Marketing Manager at ei publican partnerships, said:
“We’ve got some fantastic buildings in great locations with the right demographics. We’re looking for entrepreneurs who can cook – we can offer a lot of support for all other areas of running a pub.”
Jack Baker, who has been a chef for 18 years in various outlets from fine dining restaurants to traditional pubs, had always wanted to run his own restaurant, and it was his partnership with ei publican partnerships that enabled him to realise his dream.
He now runs the Castle Inn at Bradway in Sheffield. He said:
“My business partner and I are both chefs so we’d run kitchens before, but we didn’t have the knowledge or experience of running a pub.”
For Jack, the biggest challenge was finding the right venue, but this was also something ei publican partnerships were able to help with. “If you know the style of food you want to serve and the type of venue you want, ei publican partnerships will put a shortlist together for you,” he said.
“This was the first pub we saw and we fell in love with it straight away. We worked with our Regional Manager who gave us loads of ideas and helped through the whole process, and we’ve ended up with a cracking business.”
Jack took over in February and said it’s the best thing he’s ever done. The pub is now drawing in the crowds who are enjoying his vision – which includes a snug room and a lounge area in addition to an open kitchen which makes flat bread pizzas to order, a chicken rotisserie and barbecue outside, alongside a Pimms area on the decking.
ei publican partnerships has been very supportive and helped us set up from scratch. They helped with everything from the website to the complete re-design of the pub. They gave us training on cellar management, advertising, profit and loss and accountancy, as well as general management, so we knew what we were doing.
“Many outlets being run by chefs are hugely successful and are outperforming the competition. There is a real opportunity here when you consider that quality food is a key reason why consumers go back to a venue.”
